Description
Isopropyl cloprostenate acts as a selective agonist of the prostaglandin F₂α (FP) receptor, triggering G-protein–coupled signaling pathways that elevate intracellular calcium, leading to smooth muscle contraction, luteolysis, and modulation of extracellular matrix remodeling. This mechanism underlies its ability to terminate pregnancy in rodents and inhibit adipocyte differentiation in vitro. In ocular tissues, FP receptor activation increases uveoscleral outflow, reducing intraocular pressure, which explains its evaluation as an antiglaucoma agent, though its efficacy is weaker than approved analogs. Potential applications have been explored in cosmetics (e.g., eyelash growth formulations) due to its structural similarity to bimatoprost, but concerns about ocular side effects, systemic absorption, and insufficient toxicological data significantly constrain its safe therapeutic or cosmetic use.
